Substance Abuse Education Classes

The Prevention Council also offers two different education classes designed for youth involved in the court system. The classes are not limited to court-referred participants. Both programs are offered to schools as alternatives to suspensions, in addition to suspensions, and also to parents or guardians wishing to refer their child(ren). Both classes have fees attached that can be waived or reduced in some circumstances. The classes are best suited for first- or second-time non-violent offenders.

This six-week course covers basic information on most drugs of abuse, with an emphasis on alcohol and marijuana. Participants will receive accurate information about substances, the laws and consequences of use, how these chemicals affect the body, particularly the brain, and the impact chemicals may have in their personal development and future choices. It covers in depth the information presented in the Risk and Responsibility class. The class uses several guest speakers covering topics such as rape and domestic violence, underage gambling, the effects of drunk and drugged driving, and legal issues.

This class is appropriate for youth charged with any alcohol or drug related offenses, including but not limited to underage use, unlawfully dealing with a minor, fake I.D. charges, intent to sell, disorderly conduct, and any crimes or violations committed under the influence of substances or to obtain illegal substance. It is appropriate for most high school students suspended for the possession or use of substances on school grounds, or other school infractions related to alcohol or other substances.

Risk and Responsibility Class
Youth ages 14-21
Offered: the 3rd Thursday of each month 6-8 p.m.

This one-session class is designed to help youth and young adults understand the risks and consequences of their actions. Discussed is the need to take responsibility for one’s own actions and how those behaviors may affect others.  Participants are introduced to goal setting and commitment skills and the impact of risky behavior on these skills. A basic understanding of how alcohol and other drugs impact decision making will be presented.

This class is well suited for youth receiving moving traffic violations, possession of alcohol or marijuana, disorderly conduct or similar legal charges, as well as students receiving short suspensions from school. Or, it may be appropriate for a first time offender with more serious charges, who may need this information in addition to other consequences.
