A dynamic, interactive program specifically
designed for families with 10-14-year-old children, the Iowa
Strengthening Families program encourages parents and youth to
focus on improving family communication, avoiding drug and
alcohol programs, and preparing for the teen years. Youth
participate in fun, interactive sessions that help them learn
to appreciate their families, handle frustrations, and resist
peer pressure. Parents and caregivers discuss the
characteristics of children in this age group, talk about how
to set reasonable rules and consequences, and how to show love
while also setting limits. In addition to the separate
workgroups for both parents and young people, each week's
workshop also includes time for parents and kids to work
together on the skills they've learned separately.
In long-term, nationwide studies,
Strengthening Families has been shown to have a long-lasting
impact on reducing adolescent drug use. Area parents who’ve been
through the program confirm that the
program has helped smooth out rough spots in the short term as
well:
-
“Life is quieter. There isn’t as much fighting. We’ve
learned to listen to each other.”
-
“I have made clear rules that the children understand and
appreciate.”
-
“Our son appreciates his family more and sees his
responsibility in helping it work.”
- “The children seem to have
an understanding of family dynamics instead of just the ‘me’
attitude.”
The Prevention Council also offers a two-day program to local
agencies interested in training Strengthening Families
facilitators. For more information about scheduling a "Train the
