Cool Out of
School is a summer recreation program that incorporates
substance abuse and violence prevention programming within
an adventure game framework. The program runs for six weeks
in various town camp settings throughout Saratoga County.
College-age youth who've received extensive training in
leadership and conflict resolution skills are assigned to
each town site, and they provide 2 or 3 sessions per week
for each of three separate age groups: ages 5-6, 7-9, and
10-12. The goal of the program is to help children build
life skills in a recreational setting.

| Week 1: Getting
to know you -- getting acquainted and trust building
activities. |
| Week 2:
Friendship -- getting along with others; making and
keeping positive friends. |
| Weeks 3 and 4:
Conflict and Cooperation -- building teamwork and the
skills of conflict resolution without violence.

| Week 5: Making
Good Decisions -- choosing to be free of tobacco,
alcohol and other drugs; safe risk taking.

| Week 6: Let's
Celebrate - appreciating each other, saying good-bye;
family picnic and parent program. |

Cool Out of School
Youth Counselor Training is a two day training program
for teenage counselors or counselors-in-training at various
town recreation sites. This 8 - 10 hour program also
includes 2 one-hour follow up sessions, designed to
reinforce skills and provide an opportunity to deal with
difficult situations. Participants develop communication,
problem solving, conflict resolution and leadership skills
and gain understanding of the importance of their role as
positive peer influences. They learn techniques for avoiding
power struggles, managing difficult behavior, using the
teachable moment, and building group cooperation. The
curriculum includes the following:

Day
One: Learning to Lead - Communication,
age-appropriate expectations and interventions,
building assets in children, leadership skills and
expectations. |
|
Day
Two: Problem Solving and Conflict Resolution -
helping children manage anger, work out problems
without violence, and techniques for building
cooperation. Follow Up one and two: Refining skills,
and dealing with difficult behavior. |
