Parents: The Anti-Drug
This site was
created to give parents and other caregivers
practical tools for raising drug-free kids.
The site serves as both an information
clearing house and a supportive community for
parents to interact and learn from each other.
Parents Helping Parents
This is an interesting website created by and for parents of teenagers
with substance abuse issues. It includes a variety of
informational resources, as well as an anonymous forum for parents to
share their experiences, ask questions, and support one another.
Although most of the site's participants are based in Oklahoma, it's
still a great resource.
Talking with Kids about Tough
Issues
This site includes practical advice about talking with kids about sex,
violence, drug use, and HIV/AIDS.
Time to Talk
This site requires
parents to sign in before receiving tips about how to talk to teens
about substances, including sample scripts of what to say and how to
teach your kids to turn down drugs.
Time to Act
This site has great
video interviews with experts who offer tips on what to do if you
suspect or know your child is using substances.
Dr. Randy Cale's Terrific
Parenting Website
This site includes
helpful articles, proven guidance, and
products that will help parents help their kids become
more responsible and respectful. The site includes loads of free
guidance, along with the option to subscribe to a free newsletter.
Parenting with Dignity
Topics on this website, developed by Mac Bledsoe, president and founder
of the non-profit organization Parenting with Dignity, include how to
talk with your child about drugs,
sex, family values, Internet use, and family traditions. Mac Bledsoe’s
books and parenting videos have been featured on the TODAY Show and
ABC's 20/20.
Most Valuable Parents
This is a site developed by the Search Institute, a national
leader in researching and generating proven ways to raise healthy,
responsible children and adolescents. Guidance is based on Search's
theory of the 40 Developmental Assets, which identify positive
experiences, relationships, opportunities and personal qualities that
all young people need to help them make positive choices.
Parents Empowered
This site is based on the "Parents Empowered" media and education
campaign funded by the Utah Legislature. The site contains good content
about parents' roles in their children's lives, the risk factors for
substance abuse, and what parents can do to connect with their kids.

Community of Concern
In response to an overwhelming response to a booklet published for
parents
about keeping their
children substance free, community members from the Washington, D.C.
metropolitan area created a non-profit organization and website that
includes helpful parenting resources, both in written and electronic
format.
HBO's Documentary on Addiction
In March 2007, HBO aired a feature-length documentary about addiction.
This site has links to the series, which you can watch online or order
on DVD; as well as a variety of links and recommended reading lists.
National Youth Anti-Drug Media
Campaign
This is the parent organization of The Anti-Drug.com
website, created by the federal Office of National Drug Control Policy.
Drug Abuse Resistance Education
This site is a resource for both parents and kids,
including how to talk to your kids about drugs along with fun activities
for young people.
National
Institute on Drug Abuse
This site has extensive resources for kids, parents
and teachers, as well as researchers and other health professionals.
There's a comprehensive list of drugs, including information about
street names, why they're used, and adverse effects.
MADD
This site is not only for victims of drunk driving. There are also
resources for kids, statistics about the impact of drunk driving, plus
underage drinking research and facts about how alcohol impacts boys,
girls, and the body in general.
International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High Risk Behavior
McGill University in Quebec is one of the leading institutions in the
research, prevention and treatment of problem gambling behaviors among
youth. This site includes research, prevention and treatment information
for parents, along with a section for youth that includes a quiz to help
them identify a gambling problem. (Note: This site loads
slowly.)
The Cost of
Underage Drinking
Calculate the societal costs of underage drinking by state. This site is
maintained by The Underage Drinking Enforcement
Training Center, a program of the U.S. Office of Juvenile Justice and
Delinquency Prevention.
FACE
This organization is a good resource for information about alcohol
issues in general, as well as how to raise awareness about substance
issues in a particular community. FACE also produces a catalog with a
variety of materials to use in alcohol awareness media campaigns.
International Institute for Alcohol
Awareness
This site describes some what this and other lobbying firms are
doing to promote policies and practices that will help prevent alcohol
abuse, underage drinking, and the availability of alcohol to minors.
IIAA is affiliated with the non-profit public health organization, the
Pacific Institute for Research and
Evaluation.
The Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth
This organization is located at Georgetown University and has some great
statistics about the impact of underage drinking. It monitors the
marketing practices of the alcohol industry in order to focus attention
on industry practices that jeopardize the health and safety of young
people.
