The focus of this day-long training will be on the dynamics of the addicted family system. During this workshop we will look at characteristics that are common to people who have been raised in a household with chemical dependency, and explore ways to change unhealthy behaviors, patterns, habits, and attitudes.

Other areas that will be explored are co-dependency, low self-esteem, difficulty dealing with feelings, and other consequences of parental addiction. The goal of the training is to provide participants with an understanding of family addiction and co-dependency, and the skills necessary to assess and treat their clients.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least three characteristics of adult children of alcoholics

  • Describe how professionals can be affected by co-dependence

  • Recognize survival roles that develop in the addicted family system

  • Identify the masks of co-dependency, such as workaholism, eating disorders, alcohol and other drug abuse

  • Learn how co-dependency recovery parallels alcoholism/drug abuse in recovery

  • Become familiar with treatment techniques and resources in the community
